How Weighted Blankets Are Made: Materials, Filling & Quality Control

A weighted blanket looks simple, but consistent quality depends on precise materials and construction. Understanding how they are made helps buyers ask the right questions and spot the difference between a durable product and one that leaks beads or feels uneven.

Fabrics and outer shell

The outer fabric determines how the blanket feels and breathes. Common options include cotton for breathability, bamboo for a cool silky hand-feel, minky for softness, sherpa for warmth, and specialized cooling fabrics for hot climates. Fabric choice should match your market and price point.

Filling: glass beads vs plastic pellets

Premium weighted blankets use micro glass beads, which are thinner, quieter and cooler than plastic pellets. Glass beads distribute weight more evenly and keep the blanket lower profile. Filling must be non-toxic and meet international safety standards.

Quilting and construction

The blanket is sewn into a grid of pockets — typically around 5cm — so the beads stay evenly distributed and cannot shift into one corner. Reinforced, double-locked seams and sealed corners prevent leakage and extend the product’s life. Even, accurate quilting is the hallmark of a well-made weighted blanket.

Quality control

Strong factories inspect at every stage rather than only at the end. Key checks include weight accuracy per unit, seam strength, colorfastness and finished appearance. AQL sampling ensures the whole batch meets standard before it ships.
